ANDRINGITRA NATIONAL PARK
The Tsaranoro Valley has a concentration of diversity and endemic species, as such as the rest of Madagascar. A large choice of treks and hikes inside or outside Andringitra national park will let you discover the best sightseeing of the region and you will bump into a sample of this unique biodiversity. Available tours are detailed in the section “Excursions and activities”. For the ultimate nature lovers, you will have to walk deep inside the Andringitra National Park, and plan a longer stay among us.
Indeed the biodiversity of Andringitra National Park is even more preserved than in the Valley as it is very difficult to go there: level differences between the rocky hills. But the reward will be to see more unique species.
Andringitra national park counts 7 species of crustaceans, 205 species of bugs, 78 species of amphibian, 50 species of reptiles, 54 species of mammals (lemurs, carnivorous, bats…) and 106 species of birds. Here is an outlook of what species you can find.

The Lemur Catta has a brown fur and his tail is ringed in black and white. You can see it all along the year in the Tsaranoro Valley. The best time to watch them is from October to November because the babies comes to life at this time, especially because this specie can give birth to twins! You can also see them in their wildest state on the Isahavato and Diavolona tour, from 2000mts elevation. The dominant is the female for the lemur Catta, like in most of the lemur species.
Alectroenas madagascariensis is a red bird with colored eyes, its troat and belly are white, its tail is purple red and its back grey-blue. You can meet with him during the Imaitso tour.
Buteo brachypterus is a bird with a curved beak. Its chest is white and brown with white spots. You can only see it above 2300mts elevation in primal forests or rocky area at high altitude.
Furcifer campani is a small black chameleon with white, red and yellow spots and 3 bands on his sides. This reptile dig in the soil to lay during the rain season, from January to March.
Calumma nasuta is a tiny yellow chameleon. The male has a white line on his sides and a horn on his head. The female is larger and has visible scales. Its body is brown with a light green shade.
Neodrepanis hypoxantha is a bird specie that you can see in high altitude. Its is among engendered species (EN) by IUCN since 2008. Andringitra national park is one of the best places in the world to watch it.
Vanga de Pollen (Xenopirostris polleni) is a bird specie among the Vangidae family and considered as endangered along IUCN since 2008. You can watch it from sea level to 1000mts high areas.
Atelornis crossleyi is a bird specie from the Brachypteraciidae family, which is endemic to Madagascar. It is also endangered along IUCN.
Around 1000 of plant species lives inside Andringitra national park. The vegetation is different from forest to forest. The forest is dense and humid at low altitude, but the most interesting forests is in the mountains. The trees are smaller and have more branches, and often sclerophyllical.
Aloes Andringitriensis is an Aloes specie endemic to Andringitra National Park. It is well known for its spectacular flowers visible from June to September. Chose the Diavolana tour to see it, and bring your camera!
Helychrisum Mirabile or the “Immortal” is a plant with purple leaves and a white flower. The flower opens in July or August. You can find it in the rocky area during the Diavolana tour.
Rhipsalis Baccifera is part of the cactus specie. Its green, delicious and grow in the forest. This plant grow on trunks (Epiphytic). The Rhipsalis Baccifera is famous for its hanging ramifications. Imaitso tour is the best to find it.
Ficus Rubra is a epiphytic plant which winds around a trunk from the bottom to the top. Hence, the tree is choked to death, after several years. You can see this wild plant when doing the Imaitso tour.
Osbeckia Andringitrensis is endemic to Andringitra national park. It is known for its small green leaves whose ramifications are in egg shape. Discover this plant by doing the Diavolana or Isahavato tours.
